My Birthday Assignment From The Divine Mother

My first birthday in Mexico, away from Chicago–the city were I was born and lived my whole life. The first where I didn’t get to celebrate-in person-with my kids and dear friends.

I had a lot of emotions leading up to this day–sadness, curiosity, gratitude, grief–all rolled into one.

To honor this day, I was led to schedule a session in a holistic center near my home where they created a special birthday experience for me.

When the session began, I was led to a beautiful candlelit room where a bath was waiting for me.
As I entered the bath, the lovely therapist, Claudia, prayed and invoked my ancestors. She burned copal and struck a gong. She then poured some Himalayan salt into the bath as she continued the sacred incantations.

Thus began my three-hour healing journey.

In the bath, my ancestors welcomed me back home. Yes, Chicago had been my home, they acknowledged with understanding, but the time had come for my return to Mexico, the land of my roots.

This country holds much of your Soul’s medicine, they told me. As I soaked in the water I took in their words.

When the bath was done, I was led to another room where I laid on a massage table.

Claudia had a bowl of ground cacao and she gently brushed it all over my body. I marveled at how over a year ago I had completed my Cacao Priestess training which had reconnected me with this medicine of my ancestors.

Since then, cacao has become an important part of my Priestess path, and now here I was infused in the cacao’s loving medicine.

When she was done, Claudia cocooned me in blankets to let the cacao prepare my skin to release.

I waited engulfed in the cacao’s resonance of love.

Then the exfoliation began.

The release of the old skin.

The old life.

The old identity.

Parts of me resisted letting it all go.

But I reminded them that we were only letting go of what was no longer needed.

The learning, the blessings, the connection to loved ones–all those we were keeping.

Finally came the massage.

I felt the Divine Mother enter the space.

Of course, she had always been there, but now, after all this releasing, I could sense her more deeply.

I felt how much love she had for me and how I often, unwittingly, blocked it.

I recognized the parts of me that held so much pain about my own relationship with my mother. I knew, that these parts of me weren’t accustomed to being cherished in this way. I soothed them. I told them I understood.

I reminded myself that experiencing the unconditional love of the Divine mother was a prayer I’ve had for a long time.

It was, in many ways, my most holiest longing. Internally I declared,  I am willing to receive the Divine Mother’s love more than ever before. 

The Divine Mother responded:

Let yourself be loved by me.

Anchor in my love.

Take this love to others. 
Take this love to others. 
Take this love to others.

Ahh this is what this is all for, I remembered.

I receive her love, not just for myself, but for the world.

That was my assignment from her, my Divine commission so to speak.

The Divine Mother continued,

Go and take this love to others, 

with your words, 

your presence, 

your story, 

your challenges, 

your initiations, 

all of it. 

The beautiful and the painful. 

The profound and the mundane. 

All of it.

When it was all over I prayed to remember this assignment from the Divine Mother, especially on those days when I felt discouraged, anxious or distracted with life.

Take this love to others, she had said and I intended to do that, especially when it was hard.

This is all of our sacred missions now. The Divine Mother is calling ALL OF US l to love in this way. But in order to do that, we must let ourselves be loved by her.

It turns out, that letting this love in takes a lot of courage. But you are brave.

Think of all the other things you’ve let in–lies, judgement, pain, suffering.

How noble you were to sign up for this human life where you would experience so much of the opposite of love.

Now, the boldest part of our mission has come: to let the Divine love in, and take it to the world. There’s no time to waste. Let’s do it together.
