I know it sounds almost cliché to speak of our inner child, but the truth is that it is this young part of us that often holds the essence of what our life’s purpose is, as well as the wounds that keep us from embracing it.
A child that has grown up in a loving environment thrives, and feels safe to explore the world. She is open, and curious, and allows her imagination to blossom. And if she makes mistakes she knows that she is still loved. These are all qualities that we need as we strive to embrace our life’s purpose, yet many of us struggle because we are still carrying childhood wounds.
Just noticing what is coming up for you as you read this can lead to healing. Did it make you smile, or where you uncomfortable? Did you feel curious, or did you think it was silly, and sort of rolled your eyes? Maybe you felt some sadness or anger. Perhaps like me, you felt a little bit of all of those emotions.
You don’t need to fix any of these feelings. For now, just imagine yourself as a big, loving container—a womb—for all of these emotions. With this process you are making room for your inner child to come forward, and this is one of the most powerful things we can do for ourselves, for she* holds the key to many blessings.
*When I work with clients we inevitably come across their “inner children”. I used “she” throughout this post for ease in reading, but of course, our inner child can be a girl or a boy.
